2024 Volunteers Deliver Care Packages to Seniors

August is typically a hot month and the resurgence of hot temperatures validates that once again. In spite of the hot weather, this past weekend (August 9-11, 2024) the non-profit Thomye Delle “Celebrate Our Seniors” program kicked off its 21st year of honoring senior citizens in Brenham and Washington County. As has been the case since 2005, the program spearheads a celebration of senior citizens who have given so much to their community, without the expectation of any reciprocal benefits.

On Friday, August 9th, co-founder and program organizer Mrs. Veronica Ferguson Maxie and a cohort of volunteers delivered bundles of personal care packages to senior citizens in area nursing homes, including High Hope Care Center, Brenham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and Argent Court Assisted Living Center. Beginning on Saturday, August 10th, 10+ teams of volunteers began delivering 160+ individual care packages to senior citizens in private homes in Brenham, Burton, Chappell Hill, Washington, and places in between.

These personal care packages included essential items such as socks, hand lotion, hand sanitizer, tooth paste, tooth brushes, blankets, puzzles, coloring books, and gift cards. Also included in the care packages were handmade greeting cards from youth in our communities.

“The continued success of the Celebrate Our Seniors program is a testament to the untiring support of the community,” said co-founder Tre Maxie. During Sunday morning worship services at Mt. Rose Missionary Baptist Church in Brenham, Mrs. Maxie and other program organizers took the opportunity to thank the church’s youth and congregation for their unwavering support, and by extension, all the area churches, businesses, organizations, and volunteers who make the program possible.

Thanks is also due to the civic leaders of Brenham and Washington County for recognizing the tremendous importance of the Celebrate Our Seniors program. Each entity proclaimed August 10th (or the second Saturday in August) as “Celebrate Our Seniors Day” with a proclamation heralding the benefit of the program to our senior citizens.

The nonprofit now begins to focus on developing its 2025 program. For more detailed information about the program and its activities over the years, view its website at www.celebrateourseniors.com. Anyone desiring to support the program in any capacity is asked to contact Veronica Ferguson Maxie via email at celebrateourseniorsday04@gmail.com, telephone (979) 830-5555, or by mail at Celebrate Our Seniors, 2628 Hwy 36S, Suite #244, Brenham, Texas 77833.

Planning for 2025

While Celebrate Our Seniors held an in-person program in 2023 (its 20th year!), due to COVID, there were no in-person programs in 2020, 2021, and 2022.  Instead, the program delivered senior care packages to seniors in local nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and private residences (see the Photos section).  Due to precautionary measures for our seniors, the program returned to delivering personal care packages in 2024.  The program organizers and volunteers are working with senior citizens to  determine what type of program to develop for 2025.  Stay tuned.

Our Mission

The mission of the Brenham Community Festival's "Celebrate Our Seniors" program is to recognize, honor and celebrate the contributions that senior citizens of Washington County have made in their communities.  Oftentimes, these individuals and the positive impact they have had on their communities go unrecognized.  To date, the program has acknowledged the positive contributions of over 75 individuals and couples.  And during the pre-COVID period when in-person programs were being held, over 3,500 meals have been served to program participants.  In addition to the recognition and meal, live gospel music, bingo games, and door prizes (including cash) were integral to the program.

During the 2018 program, the name of the annual program was changed to The "Thomye Delle Celebrate Our Seniors” Day Program in honor of Ms. Thomye Delle Jameson-Ferguson-Burnett, one of the first persons to be honored by the program (2005).
