The Thomye Delle “Celebrate Our Seniors” program celebrated its 20th year during August 11-13, 2023 program activities.  In recognition of the 20th anniversary of the program, on Saturday, August 12, Brenham Mayor Atwood Kenjura presented a proclamation to the family of Thomye Delle Jameson-Ferguson-Burnett, the inspiration behind and namesake of the program.  The proclamation declared the second Saturday in August, August 12, as Thomye Delle “Celebrate Our Seniors” Day.  Other city and county officials also attended to show their appreciation to the event volunteers, donors, and organizers.

During the weekend of activities and award presentations (which began on Friday, August 11), “Celebrate Our Seniors” honored Claudette Stewart and Arthur McBride, Sr. (deceased) for their long term, unheralded service and commitment to the citizens of Washington County.  These were the first award presentations to be made since the 2020 COVID pandemic.

As has been the practice for the last few years, on Saturday morning, August 12, Celebrate Our Seniors volunteers distributed over 160 care packages to senior citizens in private residences throughout Washington County.  This was in addition to care packages delivered on August 11 to senior citizens in Brenham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, High Hopes Care Center, and Argent Court Assisted Living Center.

The Celebrate Our Seniors program organizers also held an appreciation program on August 12 for the countless donors, supporters and volunteers who have enabled the program to be successful, year in and year out, for 20 years.  As program co-founder Veronica Maxie says, “To say ‘Thank You’ seems trite and trivial, but there is no greater compliment that our seniors can offer.  So on behalf of them, Thank You!”

Likewise, program co-founder Tre Maxie added, “It is by God’s grace and the gracious support of the community that we have been able to celebrate our seniors for the past 20 years.”

Rounding out the weekend of program activities, on Sunday, August 13, program organizers attended worship services at Mt. Rose Missionary Baptist Church.  There they personally thanked the Youth Ministry for their tireless support over the years in a number of capacities, including providing handwritten postcards that were an integral part of the care packages delivered to senior citizens during the COVID pandemic.  This year’s program formally concluded with a gathering of the descendants of Thomye Delle Jameson-Ferguson-Burnett to pay tribute to her devotion, dedication, and service.

Our Mission

The mission of the Brenham Community Festival's "Celebrate Our Seniors" program is to recognize, honor and celebrate the contributions that the citizens of Washington County have made to their communities.  Oftentimes, these individuals and the positive impact they have had on their communities go unrecognized.  To date, the program has acknowledged the positive contributions of over 75 individuals and couples.  And over 3,500 meals have been served to program participants.  In addition to the recognition and meal, live gospel music is presented, bingo is available, and door prizes (including cash) are awarded.

During the 2018 program, the name of the annual program was changed to The "Thomye Delle Celebrate Our Seniors” Day Program in honor of Ms. Thomye Delle Jameson-Ferguson-Burnett, one of the first persons to be honored by the program (2005).
